The average price of regular gasoline in Chattanooga fell another 4.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.77 per gallon on Sunday, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Chattanooga gas prices averaged 38 cents per gallon less than the U.S. average of $2.15 per gallon.
Local prices at the gas pump are now 54.9 cents per gallon lower than a year ago and 25.3 cents below the prices of a month ago.
"As air temperatures across the country rise to sweltering levels, gas prices have continued to cool," Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said in a statement today. "Not only are gas prices nationally at their lowest level of the summer, but they have continued to decline as the glut of oil and refined products has persisted. Almost every state saw a decline in gasoline prices versus last week, thanks to crude oil prices approaching their lowest level of the summer."
Barring a major hurricane or other disruption, DeHaan said he expects gas prices to continue to decline this fall.
"We we are very likely to see many more states with average prices falling under $2 per gallon by Halloween," he said.
