Planning commissioners pushed form-based code changes a significant step closer to becoming city code today, by recommending City Council members approve the new zoning laws next month.

A lengthy discussion about downtown parking requirements occupied a large part of the first hour-and-a-half of Monday's afternoon meeting. Opinions among downtown developers and residents were still split about whether the city is doing enough in the code to preserve parking.

But planning commissioners agreed to send the latest version of the form-based code - which includes parking minimums for all downtown properties except those in the central city core - on to City Council.

Yusuf Hakeem, planning commissioner and city councilman, encouraged attendees to at this point reach out to their elected representatives at the City Council level, and he reminded attendees that the City Council will have the final say on the form-based code.
