Volkswagen is finally talking about pricing for its Chattanooga-made Atlas sport utility vehicle.
Hinrich J. Woebcken, chief of Volkswagen's North America region, said at the Detroit auto show that the Atlas will start around $30,000 and top out at about $48,000. That starting price puts the Atlas at the heart of the midsize, three-row SUV segment, Cars.com said.
The Atlas will be priced more in line with competing vehicles rather than command a higher price as VW traditionally has done, according to Cars.com.
A 2017 Honda Pilot starts at $31,495, the 2017 Ford Explorer at $32,605 and the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe at $31,695.
Woebcken has said the 2018 Atlas, which is to reach dealerships in April, is designed for "the heart of the American market."
"This is the biggest and boldest Volkswagen we have ever built in the United States, delivering the distinctive design and craftsmanship we're known for," he said.
The Atlas will arrive with a full slate of available driver assistance and technology features, an expansive interior and a choice of two powertrains, according to VW, but not a diesel engine.
The SUV is the result of a $900 million expansion at the company's Chattanooga factory, and the company is bringing on about 1,100 more employees for its production.
