NW Georgia jobless rate up in October

Northwest Georgia saw the number of unemployed residents climb and its unemployment rate tick up in October.

The October unemployment rate of 4.3 percent was up from 4.1 percent in September, said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The unemployment rate rose as the number of unemployed residents increased by 391 to 17,800.

Still, the October rate is lower than the same month a year ago, which was 5.5 percent, according to the state.

But the number of metro Dalton's employed residents fell in October, though not enough to make the area's jobless rate increase.

The unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.9 percent from September to October. The October rate still compares favorably to last year when the rate was 6.3 percent.

Food City pet hunger drive to begin

The Food City Pet Club is gearing up for its annual Pet Hunger Drive from Nov. 29 through Jan. 2 throughout the supermarket chain.

Shoppers can purchase pre-packaged pet food bags for $10 and deposit them in special collection bins inside the stores with 100 percent donated to benefit local animal shelters throughout Food City's market area.

With every $10 pre-packaged bag purchase, customers using their ValuCard are also electronically entered for a chance to win a $500 contribution to the shelter of their choice, according to Food City.

"Our local animal shelters are dedicated to providing rescue, rehabilitation and adoptive placement for abused and abandoned animals," said Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer, in a statement.
