Based upon 28 indicators of happiness, ranging from income to health to family life and activity levels, WalletHub calculated the happiest and unhappiest communities from among the 182 biggest U.S. cities.

Most happy

1. Fremont, Calif.

2. Bismark, N.D.

3. San Jose, Calif.

4. Pearl City, Hawaii

5. Plano, Tex.

Least happy

1. Detroit

2. Birmingham, Ala.

3. Huntington, W.Va.

4. Gulfport, Miss.

5. Little Rock, Ark.

Memphis ranked as the 17th most unhappy city and Chattanooga ranked 20th worst of all cities for happiness.
