Four Chattanooga-based employers are among those recognized in a new national study as the best places to work in America.

Great Place to Work Institute, an independent authority on high-performance work cultures, said employee surveys about the companies they work for identified the best employers headquartered in Chattanooga were Unum, the world's biggest disability company; Hospice of Chattanooga, the region's biggest provider of end-of-life care; Logistics Made Simple, a freight shipper, broker and servicer; and Reliance Partners, which sells insurance products primarily to the trucking and logistics industry.

Other companies with operations in Chattanooga that were listed in the Great Places to Work surveys included the Baker Donelson law firm, Barge Design Solutions engineering, FedEx and REPAY Realtime Electronic Payments.

Employees rate the quality of the company's challenges, atmosphere, rewards, pride, communication and bosses via an anonymous survey in the Great Place to Work Institute study.

At Unum, the biggest local company on the list, at least 90 percent of employees said they have positive experiences in each of those areas. Unum said it is spending $100 million on workplace renovation across its U.S. campuses and has expanded its paid parental leave policy to provide any new parents six weeks of paid time off following the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child.

"This feedback from employees on Unum's workplace culture is the most valuable validation we can receive of what it's like to work here," Liz Ahmed, executive vice president, people and communications at Unum, said about the new employee rating. "Creating an inclusive, supportive workplace where every employee can grow and contribute to our success directly correlates to the customer-first mindset we embrace at Unum."

Other employers on the list were liked because of their work cultures, sense of mission and opportunities for individual success.
