Piers dedicated at Wolftever Creek

Kids of all ages wet their lines last Saturday at a youth fishing event at the Wolftever Creek Boat Ramp on Chickamauga Lake.

Hosted by the Union Sportsmen's Alliance and United Auto Workers Local 42, the free event celebrated a new courtesy pier and restored fishing pier at the site.

Youth received a complimentary fishing rod and reel provided by Pure Fishing, and some got the chance to catch their first fish with bait provided by Jack's Bait & Tackle of Chattanooga.

A dedication ceremony recognized volunteers from Local 42, Electrical Workers Local 175, Ironworkers Local 704 and Sheet Metal Workers Local 5, who donated about 400 hours to improve public access to Chickamauga Lake.

"The smiles on kids' faces and the pier dedication were the perfect culmination to the hard work of the 67 union volunteers who made this project possible," said local President Steve Cochran.

Comcast stock drops after Sky purchase

Comcast Corp. won its hard-fought prize in a rare London auction over the weekend - submitting the winning bid of $40 billion for the European pay-TV company Sky - but the hangover hit Monday.

The Philadelphia cable television giant suffered its worst morning on Wall Street in nearly a decade - its shares tumbled nearly 6 percent to $35.63 per share Monday - as investors reacted by concluding that Comcast dramatically overpaid for London-based Sky.

Meanwhile, shares of Walt Disney Co. - which lost the auction - climbed 2.15 percent to $112.77.

"Disney dodges a bullet (and then some) as Comcast pays a huge premium for Sky," Bernstein & Co. media analyst Todd Juenger wrote in a report Monday "This weekend's outcome of the bidding war for Sky was, in our view, the best possible result for Disney. We never understood why Disney would want to operate a European [satellite TV] business."

Comcast's Chief Executive Brian Roberts badly wanted to add Sky to his portfolio because Comcast has struggled to build an international profile. Gobbling up Sky - even at a huge premium - will immediately give Comcast a reach into more than 23 million homes in some of Europe's most prosperous countries: Britain, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy.

Nokian Tyres CEO to attend 'Safety Fest'

Nokian Tyres will host its second "Safety Fest" on Friday and Saturday in Rhea County, Tennessee, as they invite people to learn about tire safety and meet the company's team, including Chief Executive Officer Hille Korhonen.

She will help kick off the festivities at the Rhea County High School football game tailgate party on Friday at 6 p.m. The Safety Fest will continue Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rhea County Welcome Center.

"As Nokian Tyres continues to grow its presence in Rhea County, we want to set an example in the community and emphasize the importance of proper tire care," said Hans Dyhrman, director of marketing for the company building a tire production plant in Rhea.

Friday, attendees can sign up for a chance to win a free set of Nokian Tyres' products, with the winner being announced at halftime during the game. Also, Nokian representatives will be available both days to teach tire safety tricks including how to measure tread depth and check tire pressure.

Gas prices edge up, but down from 2017

Gasoline prices in Chattanooga rose 0.6 cents per gallon last week, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 170 stations in Chattanooga released Monday.

But the $2.47-per-gallon average price for regular gas in Chattanooga on Sunday was still 36 cents per gallon below the U.S. average of $2.83 per gallon.

Chattanooga gas prices this week also are down 2 cents a gallon from the same time a year ago, GasBuddy.com said.

"With a muted response from OPEC to President Trump's exhortation via Twitter that OPEC do something to reign in high oil prices, we may see energy markets rally as concerns grow that Iran's sanctions effective in November may pose more a challenge to global supply than anticipated," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
