A Delta Air Lines plane in route from Milwaukee to Atlanta was hit by a lightning strike this afternoon and diverted to the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.

The plane, an MD 90, was carrying 164 passengers when the aircraft was struck, said airport spokesman Albert Waterhouse.

He said the plane landed safely with no injuries just after 4 p.m.

"The aircraft will be closely inspected to determine the next steps in getting the passengers to their final destination," Waterhouse said.
