The Chattanooga-based law firm of Miller & Martin has added attorney Joseph Helm to its corporate department, where he will be working with both the Nashville and Atlanta offices.

With a focus on federal and state taxation, Helm's practice includes advising on the tax aspects of business formations, transactions, and reorganizations. He also has a wealth of experience representing business clients before federal and state tax authorities in connection with tax audits and administrative appeals.

After earning an honors J.D. at Emory University School of Law and an honors LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center, Helm worked for several years in private practice before most recently serving as director of international tax with a Silicon Valley-based vaccine development company. He is a member of the Georgia, District of Columbia, and California bars, with the right to practice pending admission in Tennessee.

"Joe's broad skillset and knowledge will be a great asset to our corporate department, especially the Emerging Business and Mergers and Acquisitions practice areas," said Matt Jannerbo, corporate department chair.

 

Dr. Laura Riley joins CHI Memorial

Laura Riley, M.D., has joined CHI Memorial Internal Medicine Associates - Chattanooga.

Dr. Riley received her medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Jersey City Medical Center in New Jersey. Before attending medical school, Dr. Riley worked as a biomedical technician and engineer in the artificial heart program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania.

 

HHM CPAs adds four accountants

HHM CPAs, a full-service certified public accounting and consulting firm with locations in Chattanooga and Memphis, has added four professionals to its Chattanooga office.

Michael R. Coley, CPA, MS-Tax, has been named a senior tax manager. Coley has more than 30 years of experience and, before relocating to Chattanooga, had built an accounting practice in Southern California serving closely-held businesses and their owners. Coley previously managed the tax department for a large Southern California firm that specialized in serving construction industry clients.

Also joining HHM are staff accountants Drew Baxley, Ally Locke, and Sylvia Martin. Baxley and Locke will join the accounting and assurance department, while Martin will join the tax department.

"The addition of these new employees has created an environment of excitement and opportunity for everyone at HHM as we continue to grow and enter another tax season," said Donnie Hutcherson, HHM managing partner.

 

Buddy Eller to head TVA communications, PR

The Tennessee Valley Authority has named Buddy Eller its new vice president of communications and public relations.

In his role, Eller will lead TVA's strategic communications efforts to provide timely, accurate information to both internal and external stakeholders throughout its seven-state service territory.

"Buddy brings more than 30 years of communication experience in practically every facet of the utility industry to this position," said Sue Collins, senior vice president and chief human resources & communication officer. "Since joining TVA in 2019, he has successfully led the organization through a transitional period that has reintegrated communication functions into a highly effective team."

Prior to joining TVA, Eller served as the general manager of corporate communication and external affairs for STP Nuclear Operating Company in Texas and previously was communications director for Progress Energy Florida. Eller began his utility career at Southern Company, where he served in a number of positions of increasing responsibility over 17 years.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Georgia State University and is actively involved in a number of professional and civic organizations.

"During my brief time at TVA, I've already been impressed by the technical skill and dedication of the entire team, as well as their commitment to serving the people of the Tennessee Valley," said Eller.

 

Renee Phillips joins law office of Samuel J. Gowin

The law office of Samuel J. Gowin has hired Renee Phillips as an associate attorney to assist in real estate, property law, and probate matters.

Phillips graduated from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 1997 and she is licensed to practice in Tennessee and Kentucky.
