Dollar General is bringing a fresher, more upscale brand to downtown Chattanooga.

A new DGX brand store by Dollar General is opening this weekend in the Market City Center. Dollar General spokeswoman Mary Kathryn Colbert said the 5,200-square-foot store in the first floor of the 4-story Market City Center will offer fresh grab and go salads and sandwiches, as well as a curated selection of fresh produce. ICEE machines are also available at the new DGX location.

"Currently, the DGX Chattanooga location is scheduled to soft open this weekend," Colbert said. A grand opening celebration with special giveaways and prizes in planned later in March.

The new store will offer a selection of pet supplies, paper products, home cleaning supplies, and health and beauty products, as well an assortment of home décor, electronics and seasonal products.

"We are excited for the opportunity to serve city-dwellers with every-day low prices on the essentials they need in a convenient, easy-to-shop format to downtown Chattanooga through our DGX store," Dan Nieser, Dollar General's senior vice president of real estate and development, said in an announcement in January of the new DGX outlet.

The store hours will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Colbert said.

Dollar General opened its first DGX store in November 2016 in Nashville. Dollar General currently operates eight DGX stores, including two in Nashville as well as locations in Raleigh, North Carolina; Philadelphia; Cleveland, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska.

The new store is designed to serve urban shoppers in a convenient, easy-to-shop format. The merchandise mix is geared toward instant consumption and includes a beverage bar, coffee station and grab-and-go sandwiches.

When the DGX format debuted, company CEO Todd Vasos said it will "meet the needs of the millennial shopper, which is an emerging and important part of our customer base and will help us broaden our appeal to attract a new segment of urban customers who put a high premium on value and convenience."

The DGX store will be housed in the same 10-story, $30 million structure that holds 72 apartments and 53 Stay Aflred vacation rental hotel rooms.

Dollar General already operates more than two dozen stores in the Chattanooga area, but the downtown site will be the first local DGX store. Family Dollar operates a store three blocks north of the new DGX store.
