A new ranking of more than 3,300 U.S. hospitals included data on community commitment to equity and inclusion at each hospital, along with clinical outcome data. The Lown Institute, a Brookline, Mass.-based nonpartisan think tank, compared 42 measure of quality and inclusion to develop its rankings.

"At a time when communities are relying on them like never before, hospitals must rethink what it means to be great," said Vikas Saini, M.D., president of the Lown Institute. "COVID-19 highlights how hospitals are essential community partners for anyone in need. To be great, however, a hospital cannot only provide care that's high in quality. It must also deliver value and advance equality."

Based on the index measures, Tennessee's top hospitals are:

1. Fort Loudon Medical Center in Lenoir City

2. Franklin Woods Community Hospital in Johnson City

3. Roane Medical Center in Harriman

4. Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville

5. Baptist Memorial Hospital hospital in Union City
