As students in most of America prepare to return to school next month in either modified classrooms or online, the financial website WalletHub analyzed 33 metrics of quality of public schools among the 50 states to rank the states, including measures of performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials.

Best states for public schools

1. Massachusetts

2. Connecticut

3. New Jersey

4. Virginia

5. Vermont

Worst states for public schools

1. New Mexico

2. Louisiana

3. Arizona

4. Alaska

5. Oklahoma

Source: WalletHub. Alabama was the 8th worst state for public schools, while Tennessee and Georgia ranked 16th and 17th, respectively, from the bottom of states in the overall quality of their public schools.
