Delta Air Lines will resume nonstop service from Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport to Detroit beginning Saturday, Aug. 1, as flights start to rebuild in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Also, Delta is adding additional flights to Atlanta in July and August, bringing the total count of Atlanta departures to eight beginning Aug. 1.

The Chattanooga Airport anticipates additional flights will be added to the schedule in the coming months, according to an official.

"We are very encouraged by the return of this [Detroit] flight and appreciate Delta's ongoing commitment to Chattanooga travelers," said Terry Hart, president and CEO at the airport. "We look forward to welcoming travelers to the Chattanooga Airport as we continue to move forward."

Airport officials said earlier this month that United Airlines is cutting service at the airport starting in early July and lasting at least through September because of the downturn in travelers nationally from the coronavirus.

Officials said air traffic is rebounding slowly from the sharp drop over the past several months.

Chattanooga Airport boardings were down 86.3% in May compared to a year ago, according to Lovell Field, with just 6,843 passengers getting on a plane. Passenger boardings in Chattanooga were down nearly 95% in April from the same month in 2019.

Delta had been providing just two daily trips at the start of the coronavirus outbreak, and it had cut out service from Chattanooga to Detroit and New York.
