A new battery engineering lab at Volkswagen, a terminal expansion at the Chattanooga Airport and several new retailers are just a few of the many business developments and announcements from the month of June.
Here's a look at the recent business trends this past month in the Chattanooga area:
What's opening
The nation's largest Black-owned pizza chain, Slim + Husky's, opened a Chattanooga location at M.L. King Boulevard and Mabel Street.
TailGate Brewery opened in the former Terminal Brewhouse site near the Chattanooga Choo Choo. TailGate Brewery is one of Tennessee's largest breweries and the Chattanooga location is the first taproom outside of Nashville.
Food City opened a new and expanded supermarket in East Ridge. The supermarket includes a Gas 'N Go fuel station, a food cafe, a credit union office and a broader offering of produce and grocery items.
Welcome Home of Chattanooga has opened a cancer respite home to provide shelter to homeless people receiving cancer treatment. The nonprofit organization provides hospice care to the homeless in the Chattanooga area.
Four new retailers, Rose & Remington, Tradehome Shoes, Hollie Ray Boutique, and 96' Kickz, will open at the Hamilton Place mall this summer.
Co-Op Frosé and Eatery plans to open a 1,000-square-foot storefront in the Riverview shopping center on Dorchester Road. The cafe is based out of Charleston, South Carolina.
A sandwich and coffee cafe called The Sleepy Sloth Cafe opened at the Northgate Mall in Hixson.
The Bode hotel added new food and drink options for guests with the opening of a cocktail lounge known as Dusk and a coffee bar known as Dawn.
What closed
Ziggy's at 607 Cherokee Boulevard will close for good following the death of owner Michael Wood after an illness, according to manager Kelley Eaves.
What's expanding
In June the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport launched a passenger terminal expansion that will add new gates to board planes, enlarge the security checkpoint and strengthen amenities for travelers.
TwelveStone Health Partners has relocated and expanded its local clinic and pharmacy to East Brainerd in a suite at 1206 Pointe Centre Drive.
Volkswagen Chattanooga in June unveiled a new battery engineering lab. Officials say the lab will help make Volkswagen the epicenter of the automaker's electric vehicle efforts in North America.
Announced developments
Between 2020 and 2030, Chattanooga leaders expect to conduct $513 million worth of improvements to the city's sewer infrastructure. This is the second phase of an almost two-decade project to prevent wastewater from entering the Tennessee River.
More than 700 apartment units are planned for a vacant parcel near Highway 58. The land will measure about 54 acres at 8699 N. Hickory Valley Road, said MAP Engineers owner Mike Price.
Empire Communities is proposing to buy and develop more than 72 acres surrounding the former Cigna office complex on Goodwin Road. The area near Hamilton Place could be a new school with hundreds of new surrounding homes.
The Tomorrow Building and Society of Work will expand to Chattanooga's North Shore, offering co-living and co-working space under one roof.
