With the highest temperatures of the year expected Friday in Chattanooga, air conditioners will be working overtime.

Here are some tips on how you can save cold cash during this hot weather:

* Turn up the temperature setting on your thermostat. The Department of Energy estimates savings of about 1 percent for each degree of thermostat adjustment.

* Use fans to move air – they use far less power than your air conditioner.

* Keep the blinds on the sunny side of your house closed to limit sunlight in your house.

* Grill outside instead of using the oven for cooking.

* Avoid long showers and to help limit peak demand avoid laundry washing, drying or dishwasher use during afternoon hours
