Chattanooga's biggest credit union has moved its downtown branch, but not very far.

With marching music provided by saxophonist Swayyvo who stars in the credit union commercials, officials with the Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union (TVFCU) strolled across the 700 block of Market Street Monday morning to close its downtown branch at 715 Market Street and relocate the office just across the street in a leased first-floor office of the Market City Center at 728 Market Street.

"Maintaining our presence in the heart of downtown Chattanooga is extremely important to us," said Todd Fortner, president and CEO of TVFCU. "The new City Center branch will continue to allow downtown employees and urban residents the convenience of a walk-up branch."

The credit union opened its 715 Market Street location in 1978, but Fortner said the three-story building no longer meets TVFCU's needs and the office is being sold.

The credit union's administrative offices outgrew the former headquarters facility and TVFCU moved into the former IBM building at 535 Chestnut Street in February 2018.

The new 1,792-square-foot City Center branch features three interactive teller machines in the vestibule, which is accessible after hours to TVFCU members with a debit or ATM card.

TVFCU plans to open a second branch in the downtown area next Monday when the Southside office opens on West 20th Street. That office will include a drive through window to help replace the drive-through that closed Monday at 715 Market Street.
