Q. I need to reduce my utility expense at home. What tips may BBB offer in these requirements?

A. Making your home energy efficient as possible will save you money. Daylight-saving time has begun; the time change has the purpose of making better use of daylight and conserving energy. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average American household uses just over 900 kilowatts or about $114 a month.

There are many ways to conserve energy in your home. A first step for many homeowners should be an energy audit. An energy audit is an inspection, survey and analysis of energy flows, for energy conservation in a home. Locally, EPB and surrounding utility companies in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia will offer free in-home energy audit for your home.

When looking to conserve energy, your Better Business Bureau offers these helpful tips:

* Consider planting trees/bushes near and around the house. This will provide shade to the home.

* Keep furniture away from heat and air conditioning vents.

* Make sure blinds, drapes and shades are closed during the day in the summer to block out the sun. However, in the winter you should leave them open so the sun can heat your home.

* Install a programmable thermostat. Also, drop your thermostat a few degrees to save money on heating/cooling bills.

* Change the air filter in your HVAC routinely to keep it running efficiently. Suggestion: enter a change schedule on your calendar.

* When temperatures are moderate, use ceiling fans instead of the air conditioner. Ceiling fans are cheaper to operate and circulating air feels cooler.

* Be sure to have your house and attic insulated properly.

* Replace old windows with energy efficient ones.

* Choose high- efficiency appliances. For example, high–efficiency washers use half the water as a standard model.

* Use LED lights. LEDs are some of today's most energy-efficient lights. LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting.

* Stop air leaks by caulking, sealing and weather-stripping them.

* Consider alternate forms of energy. For example, solar energy can help save the environment and money. Note: Federal tax income credits may be available on some of these type products. Consult with your CPA to determine if that is an option.
