America's biggest retailer plans to hire 4,200 workers in Tennessee in the next couple of months to staff its stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers.

Walmart said Friday the additional associates being hired in Tennessee are among 150,000 employees the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retail giant is adding nationwide through the end of May. Walmart operates 30 superstores, Neighborhood Centers and other retail outlets in the Chattanooga region.

Walmart and other grocery outlets are doing more business as students and workers spend more time at home and restaurants are shuttered in many cities, including Chattanooga, due to the spreading coronavirus.

Food City announced earlier this week it is adding 2,500 employees across its 4-state footprint, including more than two dozen stores in the Chattanooga area.

Walmart also announced this week it is giving all of its U.S. hourly employees a one-time bonus of $300 for full-time workers and $150 for part-time workers. The bonus checks, which will be paid out April 2, total $365 million across the country.

"Walmart associates have gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving our customers during these unprecedented times," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said. "We want to reward our associates for their hard work and recognize them for the work that is in front of us."

Walmart is the largest private employer in the world with 2.2 million workers.
