Artist Scott Conary of Portland, Ore., will teach a workshop on painting a still life at Townsend Atelier, 301 E. 11th St., on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

Additionally, the artist will give a free public talk about his artwork, the evolution of his process, his life and artists that have inspired and informed his work on Friday evening, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. Through a slide presentation, Conary will talk about walking the line between abstraction and representation.

Conary creates paintings of everyday objects and places with which we have complicated and often ambiguous relationships. Pulled from their context, they have something to say about how we interact with the world and each other.

Fueling and inspiring this work is his young daughter's battle with heart defects, her experiences with disability and the impact that has had on those around her.

He is represented by Principle Gallery, Charlestown Gallery, Sager|Braudis Gallery and Heidi McBride Gallery.
