MGM classics in Bobby Stone Film Series this weekend

Two Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cinematic classics are next in the Bobby Stone Film Series at the Tivoli Theatre, 709 Broad St.

"Ben-Hur" will be shown Saturday, Aug. 3, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 children.

Charlton Heston stars as the title character - a Jewish prince who is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend. He regains his freedom and comes back for revenge. The 1959 movie is known for its battle at sea and breathtaking chariot race.

"Ben-Hur" won 11 Academy Awards. It was ranked No. 2 on the American Film Institute's Top 10 Epic Films list.

* In celebration of its 80th anniversary this year, "The Wizard of Oz" is being shown in theaters across the country. It will be screened at 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Tivoli. All seats will be $5.

This adaptation of Frank Baum's children's book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," is filled with memorable melodies such as "Over the Rainbow," "Ding! Dong! The Witch is Dead," "Follow the Yellow Brick Road," and "We're Off to See the Wizard."

Judy Garland plays Dorothy Gale, the teen who is swept away in a tornado from her Kansas farm to a magical land called Oz. There she embarks on a quest with her new friends to find the Wizard of Oz, who can help her return home to Kansas and help her friends as well.

"The Wizard of Oz" won two Oscars, one of them Best Original Song for "Over the Rainbow."
