Two of the top trumpeters in the nation will be in Chattanooga this weekend to instruct student musicians and perform for the public when the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Music Department hosts the 2014 Trumpet Festival of the Southeast.
Dr. Erika Schafer, assistant professor of trumpet at UTC, says more than 150 participants representing eight Southern states will be in attendance. Schafer says this festival was held for more than a decade at Western Carolina University, then began rotating to different schools four years ago. This is UTC's first time to host the event.
Headlining the three-day festival, Jan. 17-19, are Allan Dean, professor of trumpet at Yale University, and Tito Carrillo, professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Illinois.
Carrillo is a trumpeter, educator, bandleader, composer and arranger but is best known as a fixture of the Chicago jazz and Latin music scenes. He has performed with Bobby Broom, Woody Herman Orchestra, Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, Louis Hayes, Vincent Herring, Tony Vega, Cheo Feliciano, Tito Puente, Quincy Jones and Phil Collins.
In addition to teaching trumpet at Yale, Dean performs with the Summit Brass, St. Louis Brass and Yale Brass Trio. He was a founding member of Calliope: A Renaissance Band and the New York Cornet and Sackbut Ensemble. He played with the New York Brass Quintet for 18 years.
He has appeared at the Spoleto Festival, The Banff Centre in Canada, Musik i Blekinge in Sweden, Curitiba Music Festival in Brazil and Morella Festival in Spain.
Schafer says trumpet players of high school age or older may register at the door. Registration begins Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the lobby of the UTC Fine Arts Center, and the fee is $50. There will be mass ensemble performances, technique workshops, hourlong master classes led by Carrillo and Dean, and an exhibitors space in Room 100 of the Fine Arts Center.
About a dozen vendors will be displaying horns, music, mouthpieces and other items of interest to brass musicians in the exhibit room. This room will be open to the public and may be visited without paying a registration fee, according to Schafer.
The UTC professor notes that to have these two featured artists in town at the same time is a rare opportunity.
"They are world-renowned -- among the best trumpet players in the profession. They are performers on an international level of success as well as clinicians," she says.
