John Cowan could be considered a man of contrasts.

He is one of the most revered figures in acoustic music, yet he plays an electric bass.

He was a guiding force in the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival in the 1970s and '80s. Yet twice he has joined The Doobie Brothers when the classic rock band needed a bass player/vocalist.

Cowan's influence goes back 40 years, and many say his soaring vocals have only improved with time. He applies those powerful pipes to genres from country, bluegrass and gospel to soul, jazz and rock 'n' roll, often within the space of a single concert.

On Sunday, Jan. 19, he'll return to Chattanooga's Barking Legs Theater for a show with the John Cowan Band. On his Facebook page, he has posted this message: "Love this place. Love this crowd. Sold out last year. Let's repeat, whatta ya say?"

He is expected to perform with two longtime collaborators, both outstanding musicians: Jeff Autry on guitar and Shad Cobb on fiddle.
