The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Youth Orchestras will open their season with a globetrotting musical journey on Monday, Nov. 7.

This fall concert features the Symphony and Philharmonic, the premiere and second orchestras, respectively, made up of middle and high school musicians from the area. Their younger counterparts in the Prelude and Etude orchestras will perform their fall concert on Monday, Nov. 21, at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences.

Gary Wilkes conducts the Symphony, which will present:

* Overture from the comic opera "Zampa" by French composer Ferdinand Hérold.

* Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez, whose repertoire is influenced by Mexican salon music.

* Concerto for Violin in C Major, Op. 48, a work by Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky featuring snappy rhythms and an Ukrainian folk tune.

* Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43, the most popular and most frequently recorded symphony of Jean Sibelius, widely regarded as Finland's greatest composer.

Sandy Morris conducts the Philharmonic, which will perform:

* "America the Beautiful" by Samuel A. Ward, arranged by Paul Scott and based on the poem of the same name by Katharine Lee Bates, who was inspired by the view from the summit of Pike's Peak in Colorado.

* Allegro from Symphony No. 8, a groundbreaking work by Ludwig van Beethoven, arranged by Michael Hopkins to include the opening presentation of the "Ode to Joy" theme and the "Turkish March."

* Soldiers Chorus from "Faust," an arrangement by Clark McAlister of Charles Gounod's most famous opera, based on Goethe's play "Faust," which explored themes of temptation by the devil and redemption through religious belief.

* "American Portrait No. 1," the first in a series of musical works by Robert W. Smith inspired by the paintings of Norman Rockwell and his visions of small-town America.

* Russian Sailors' Dance from "The Red Poppy," a short but fiery piece by Reinhold Gliére, arranged by Merle Isaac, that opens in a ponderous and awkward manner intended to depict Russian sailors attempting to negotiate intricate dance steps.

Kabalevsky's Concerto will feature soloist Hayden Daniel, a 16-year-old junior at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. Hayden has been studying violin since age 7, beginning with Holly Fe de Leon, a CSOYO alumnus, and currently with Dr. Josh Holritz, associate concertmaster of the CSO, also a CSOYO alumnus. The son of Brent and Julie Daniel also plays with the Silverdale Baptist Youth Band and has sung with the Chattanooga Boys Choir since he was 8 years old.

Who’s who

› Symphony: This premiere orchestra, conducted by Gary Wilkes, features some of the best middle and high school talent in the area. They often perform standard orchestral repertoire and difficult contemporary works that would be a challenge for any orchestra.› Philharmonic: The second orchestra, conducted by Sandy Morris, is comprised up-and-coming middle and high school musicians. For many wind players, this is the first opportunity to play along with string players in a full orchestra.› Etude: Musicians from area elementary and middle schools make up this intermediate-level string training orchestra, conducted by Floy Wang.› Prelude: Floy Wang also conducts this beginning-level string orchestra of elementary and middle-school musicians, just learning the art of performing together.
