Tennessee Valley Theatre in Spring City, Tenn., will present a performance of Georges Bizet's comic one-act opera "Doctor Miracle" on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Considered kid-friendly, the opera is about a young man's quest to marry his true love, the mayor's daughter. To win over the mayor, he first disguises himself as a servant who makes a "poison" omelet and then as a doctor who saves the family. The production will be performed in English rather than the original Italian by the vocalists of Opera Tennessee, formerly Artisti Affamati (Starving Artists).

"We chose this opera for several reasons but first and foremost to get kids to the opera," says the troupe's artistic director, Sara Snider Schone. "Our mission to keep opera alive and bring back grand opera really only works if we can appeal to the next generation of arts supporters. This is a great first opera for all ages because it is short but still has all the elements of a grand opera: beautiful music, costumes, ridiculous plots and, above all, beautiful voices."
