The Sewanee Summer Music Festival, a premier orchestra and chamber music training program, opens its 61st season on Saturday, June 17, continuing through July 16.

SSMF is a program of the Music Department of the University of the South, and all events take place on campus. A record 200 students from around the world will be in Sewanee, Tenn, for four weeks of instrumental lessons, classes and performances.

Orchestra rehearsals are scheduled every day to prepare for weekly performances. Chamber music sessions are scheduled four times a week. Every student has a weekly private lesson and each studio has at least one class per week.

But it's not all work and no play. Throughout the festival, there are dorm movie nights and other social activities and, of course, outdoor activities such as early morning trail runs to capitalize on Monteagle Mountain's scenic beauty.

Mondays are designated "no-play days," when students may take time for hiking, caving, swimming or an optional field trip.

Admission to a total of 12 concerts is included in the price of the season ticket.

The concerts include seven Faculty Chamber Music Concerts, four Sunday afternoon orchestra concerts and the Jacqueline Avent Concerto Competition.

Concerts are held in Guerry Auditorium, 68 Georgia Ave. in Sewanee.

Individual tickets may be purchased in advance for $15 each or $20 at the door; children under 12 are free. A season pass for 12 concerts is $90.

Tickets purchased online will be available for pickup at the will-call table. No ticket orders are accepted over the phone or by email. For more information: https://sewanee.afford.com/PPT/MakeAPayment.

There are also four Student Chamber Music Concerts that are free to the public. These will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturdays, June 24, July 1, 8 and 15 in Guerry Garth, which is the courtyard by the auditorium.

If raining, the performances move into Guerry Auditorium.
