"I worked at a liquor store all through college," says Backup Planet's Ben Cooper.

"I was sitting there one night in a funk and every channel on TV cried, 'The end of the world is nigh!' I thought, 'Man, I wish I had a backup planet where I could go and escape.' It dawned on me: That's what naturally happens when you play music; you're transported somewhere else. It's a shared experience where everybody goes together."

Friday night, Jan. 19, Backup Planet will take their audience at Revelry Room with them on a sonic journey that combines elements of jazz, funk, roots, blues, electronic and progressive rock. And the "planets" are aligning for this show since local band Danimal Planet will open for the Nashville quartet.

Cooper and college buddy Gavin Donati started writing songs for Backup Planet in 2013. The band became a local favorite around the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. After the band independently released a full-length debut album, "Element," during 2015, the guys began sharing the stage with the likes of The Revivalists and Papadosio in addition to headlining packed shows.

Backup Planet's latest album, "Reactions," released in 2017, was recorded in Birmingham, Ala., produced by Jason Elgin (Collective Soul.) It will be the foundation of the band's Revelry Room show.

Dan "Danimal" Pinson is a local singer, songwriter, musician and producer. He attended Belmont University and Middle Tennessee State University, graduating with a degree in recording technology while playing in several bands throughout college.

Pinson worked as a musician in Nashville for eight years, playing in several bands and doing session work before moving to Chattanooga. He formed IckyBod Crankin with Josh Sable and Maria Jordania before starting Danimal Planet.
