Jericho Brass salutes the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 mission and first lunar landing with a performance Friday night, Feb. 22, in the North River Civic Center.

Titled "Fly Me To the Moon," the program's selections, both popular and classical, will all tie into the theme of the moon, the stars and space travel. The brass band includes 30 musicians from across the area.

"We have quite a variety of music that is subject-related," says conductor Frank Hale.

"We'll play the jazz tune 'Fly Me to the Moon,' we'll play 'Moonlight Serende' and an original composition that's related to the moon called 'The Dark Side of the Moon.'"

Hale says the program will also include an excerpt from the opera "Rusalka" called "Rusalka's Song to the Moon," and theme music from the 1983 movie "The Right Stuff," which was about the Mercury Seven astronauts.

Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the moon. Cmdr. Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours later on July 21, with Aldrin joining him 19 minutes later.

Command module pilot Michael Collins flew the Columbia alone in lunar orbit while the pair was on the moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21.5 hours on the lunar surface before rejoining Columbia in lunar orbit.
