The Chattanooga Bach Choir will open its fifth Barnett & Company Cantata Series on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. with a performance of Bach's "Herr Christ, dereinge Gottessohn, BWV 96 (Lord Christ, the only Son of God)," which was written by the composer for the 18th Sunday after Trinity.

Directed by David Long, the Bach Choir presents four Sunday afternoon concerts in the cantata series, performing J.S. Bach choral works chosen for that particular Sunday in the liturgical calendar. All concerts take place at Christ Church Episcopal, 663 Douglas St.

Sunday's hour-long program will open with Bach's Praeludium in C major, BWV 545 for organ, played by Karla Fowkes. It will also include Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso's a cappella motet "Dixit Dominus" (Introit for the 18th Sunday after Trinity).

"For this opening concert, we perform Bach's joyful cantata 'Herr Christ, dereinge Gottessohn' composed for the 18th Sunday after Trinity. First performed on Oct. 8, 1724, the cantata compares Jesus to the morning star, and is structured in six movements with an opening choral fantasia, solo arias and a closing four-part chorale," says Long.

As part of the concert series, Long will introduce each cantata with a brief musical explanation to place each work in its liturgical context.

A series subscription is $60 for the four concerts. Single tickets are $20. Students are free.
