Bat Blitz at Fort Mountain

A five-day Bat Blitz meant to survey the bat population at Fort Mountain State Park near Chatsworth, Ga., will kick off Sunday with a family education night.

Activities will start at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but there is a $5 park pass fee.

The ninth annual survey of the state park, part of the Chattahoochee National Forest, gives researchers, management biologists and university students a chance to exchange information and develop strategies for studying bat communities.

The surveys include three nights of mist netting at 30 to 40 sites, acoustic sampling and other techniques to determine species composition and prevalence of bats on state and federal lands within an hour of Fort Mountain.
