Winterfest BBQ helps Whitfield's young farmers

Big Mack's Pig Shack from Rocky Face will supply the victuals for today's Youth Winterfest Barbecue at the North Georgia Fairgrounds, 500 Legion Drive in Dalton.

Service begins at 7 p.m. Plates come with chopped pork barbecue, baked beans, potato salad and coleslaw.

The first-time event will raise funds for Future Farmers of America alumni groups at Southeast and Northwest Whitfield high schools, Whitfield County 4-H and Whitfield County Young Farmers.

Kandi Edwards with Whitfield County 4-H said the goal is to raise money for programming expenses incurred during the year, such as on-the-road competitions.

"We all do competitions and things like that," she said. "We hope to be able to make a little money for a trip here or there."

The evening also will include a live auction. Door prizes will be awarded.

Cost for the dinner is $15 per person, but family tickets are available for $40 for three meals, $50 for four or more.

To reach the fairgrounds from I-75, take Exit 336 East and follow Highway 41 (North Bypass) toward Rocky Face. At Highway 71 (Cleveland Highway), turn right. Go to the third traffic light and turn left. Go about two blocks to the fairgrounds on the right.
