If you don't plan to fire up the grill this Labor Day, but still crave barbecue, why not buy it from one of four local sales?

Three are benefiting nonprofits, so a purchase will help beef up their benevolence funds.


Beast Feast

Dry rub or slathered sauce, beef or pork, there is something for every taste at Sunday's 10th Beast Feast Barbecue Contest at Chattanooga Market.

Six pitmasters will compete for the Beast Feast title and a People's Choice Award. Each pitmaster will offer barbecue bite samples for $1 or marketgoers can purchase a plate from their favorite. Each company will set its own price for barbecue plate sales.

Competing for bragging rights are Trunk of Man BBQ & Brew, Lockhart's Fire & Smoke Catering, Choo Choo BBQ Smokehouse, Five Points Farm House and Cornerstone BBQ.


Knights of Columbus

This is the 77th year that the Knights of Columbus Council 610 has held its Labor Day picnic — so with that track record, they obviously are doing something right.

In addition to barbecue, this benefit includes music by The Other Brothers, games and activities for kids and adults, dunk tank, cake walk, bingo and white elephant sale. Plus, buy a chance to win a $1,000 savings bond.


Signal Mountain Lions Club

Buy a plate of tasty barbecue or buy a chance on a car. A $50 ticket gives you the chance to win one of numerous prizes and possibly the grand prize: a car or $13,000 cash. Drawing for prize winners will begin at 1 p.m.


Union Gospel Mission

Union Gospel Mission is hosting a free Labor Day barbecue for the fifth year, where plates of barbecue are given away. Diners have their choice of pork or chicken with sides of baked beans and slaw, bread, canned drink or water and a dessert.

And did we mention it's free? Yes, it is! However donations are encouraged to support the mission's goal of making $5,000.
