Contra dancers from around the region will swing, spin and promenade this weekend when the three-day Chattaboogie is held at Brainerd United Methodist Church.

Contrazz and Buddy System are the bands that will be playing for the contra dance conference. Dances will be called by Vicki Herndon and Seth Tepfer, both of whom have more than 20 years' experience in calling dances.

Contra dance is a folk dance done by couples in long lines. A pair of lines is a set. Although the dance is performed in couples, it is not necessary to have a partner upon arrival; couples can pair up as lines form.

Dances are led by a caller, who will teach steps to an individual dance in a walk-through before the music begins. When the music begins, dancers repeat the sequence a number of times until the song ends.

No special clothing is required, but comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that won't restrict movement is suggested. Soft-sole shoes that won't mark the floor are recommended.

Chattaboogie opens Friday night with a potluck dinner and waltzing at 6 p.m., and will wind up with a techno contra to the music of Buddy System at midnight.

Contra dancing resumes Saturday at 10 a.m., continuing until the 11:30 a.m. lunch break. Saturday offers the option of more dancing or attending English country dance workshops, musician's workshop, caller's workshop or flatfoot workshop that will be held during the morning and afternoon.

After dinner, contra dancing resumes at 6:30 p.m., continuing until a late-night swing dance party. Swing dancers are encouraged to come dressed in their best 1940s attire.

Sunday morning begins with waltzing to the music of Buddy System at 9:30 a.m., although at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave., so as not to disturb morning worship services at the church. Afternoon contra dances with both bands will close out the convention.

Although the general fee is $98 for the full weekend of events, there are daily prices for those who are only interested in specific events. Friday night only is $35. Saturday workshops or day dances are $25, Saturday night is $30. Sunday's fee is $25.
