Updated at 10:58 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2019, with information about the cancellation of the Donut Games.
UPDATE: The Salvation Army of Greater Chattanooga says the Donut Games scheduled for Friday, June 7, at Cambridge Square in celebration of National Donut Day have been cancelled due to inclement weather.
Since 1938, National Donut Day has been celebrated the first Friday in June, as declared by President Dwight Eisenhower to honor members of The Salvation Army who served doughnuts and other provisions to soldiers during World War I.
The Salvation Army of Chattanooga will honor the spirit of this tradition on Friday, June 7, by partnering with Tasty Donuts to deliver more than 600 doughnuts to public service officials. Volunteers will assist the Salvation Army in surprising firefighters, police officers, EMS crews, elected officials and veterans associations with tasty treats between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
That evening, from 5 to 7 p.m., the first Donut Day Games will be held in Cambridge Square in Ooltewah.
Donut Day Games is planned to be a family-friendly, community event to celebrate the history of National Donut Day and raise funds for Salvation Army programs.
The event will feature a doughnut-eating contest for teams and individuals and other doughnut-themed activities for youth and senior adults.
"All can come and enjoy festivities at no cost," says Kimberly George, Salvation Army director of marketing and development. But, she adds, contestants must register online at csarmy.org to ensure their spot.
