Ski, Shop, Eat, and Be Merry

They're saying this winter might be a snowy one, but Chattanoogans should have a backup plan just in case typical Tennessee weather wins out. For all those whose hearts are set on a white winter experience, Boone, North Carolina is only a four-and-a-half-hour romp away from the Scenic City, and it has some scenes of its own you don't want to miss.

Stay

A cozy home base is essential on a visit during the wintery days of Boone. "One thing that really appeals to people during cold weather is having a cabin to rent," says Michelle Ligon. "They want to make sure it has a fireplace and a really nice view. There are hundreds to choose from." Visitors can take their pick of rustic lodgings, with some units backing right up to the slopes and others hidden away in the trees. Put a romantic spin on the excursion by staying at one of the several bed and breakfasts in and near town, including the Lovill House Inn, the Mountainside Lodge Bed and Breakfast and the Taylor House Inn.

Eat

A hearty meal is a necessity after spending a day in the snow, and even the most devoted foodies can find cuisine to their liking in Boone. Locally owned Pepper's Restaurant and Bar was originally established in 1975 as a high-quality sandwich deli and has since transformed into a full eatery. Popular entrées include Angus beef steaks, fresh seafood and pasta as well as Pepper's famous French onion soup, fried mushrooms and onion rings.

Located in downtown Boone is a collection of unique restaurants, says Ligon, including Vidalia Restaurant and Wine Bar and Proper. "Both of these are kind of a gourmet twist on Southern fare. Proper is in the oldest structure, that I know of, in downtown Boone," she says. "The Gamekeeper Restaurant is renowned, located just outside of Boone between it and Blowing Rock," Ligon continues, explaining that the restaurant has been featured in multiple magazines including Marquee Magazine and Shout Magazine. With its modern take on mountain cuisine-grilled elk, duck confit, North Carolina mountain trout and more-The Gamekeeper was also listed as OpenTable.com's Diners' Choice in 2011.

Shop

Home to Appalachian State University, Boone has a definite college-town flair, with thrift stops abounding, says Ligon. History-infused locations like Mast General Store also provide a unique shopping experience. The general store's been in business since 1883 and it stocks everything from clothing to footwear to candy to toys and other gifts.

For even more variety, visiting shopaholics can enter The Shoppes at Farmers Hardware. A nearly 90-year-old hardware store turned retail emporium located in the heart of Boone, the site houses a diverse range of booths that offer locally crafted goods, jewelry, clothing, home décor and other specialty items, making it the perfect spot to finish up some last-minute Christmas shopping. Or for adding a thing or two to your own wish list.
