20 Under 40: John Baldwin III

John Baldwin III, 28

Market associate administrator/co-ethics and compliance officer, Parkridge Medical Center

Who's your favorite "Game of Thrones" character?

Jon Snow. His bravery, authenticity and genuine nature is one that is easy to admire. He strives to stand up for what is right and is willing to sacrifice for the good of others. Though I must admit I've only watched the first few seasons of GOT, so I'm probably not as well-versed as others.

Which GOT character do you think you would be?

I would have to go with Jon Snow. There are many positive attributes that I can relate to; the most noticeable is servant leadership. He is willing to do what it takes to make sure the lives of others are improved and impacted positively.

Who would you have put on the Iron Throne?

Not exactly sure. I'm still on Season 3, so I'm late to the GOT series. I guess you can say I haven't had much time for TV lately.

Last book you read and/or show you binge-watched?

Last two books: "Blue Ocean Strategy" and "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team."

If you ruled the world (or Chattanooga), what would you change?

Childhood hunger and the cycle of poverty.

Who would be on your advisory council?

LeBron James. He is my favorite athlete of all time - most notably for his impact outside of athletics due to his work within the community, philanthropy, and development as a self-made businessman. Eric Thomas. He has an exceptional ability to motivate and inspire. In essence, he would be the "motivator." John Maxwell. His teaching and knowledge around leadership and developing teams would be invaluable. I've learned so much from his books and would need a leadership guru. Randall Tucker, my cousin whom I admire for his character and courage. He is a minister and I would seek his wise counsel and spiritual guidance. My parents. They know me better than anyone else and would keep me grounded to stay true to who I am and my values. Their guidance and support would be tremendously helpful. Warren Buffet or Bill Gates. They both have achieved massive levels of success in business. However, I'm more impressed by their commitment to philanthropy and using their wealth to address social issues within the world. Their guidance on lessons learned in this journey would be invaluable. Michelle Obama. She served her country as first lady with such style and grace. Her story of life and perseverance is incredible and one that I truly admire. Not to mention she has a brilliant mind and would help provide a positive influence.

Is ruler a position you'd even want?

No, because that is too much power for one person to have. I'd rather have a position of influence that allows me to have a platform to empower communities, families and the youth.

What drives you professionally and/or personally?

I live by the quote "To whom much is given, much is required." I have been blessed to have an amazing support system of family, friends and mentors. All play a pivotal role in my life and invest so much into me that I'm forever indebted to them. Therefore, it's my life's mission to improve lives through leadership and service. I am motivated to pursue my dreams and fulfill my purpose in order to build new opportunities for the next generation. My drive personally and professionally is to leave a legacy of making a difference in the lives of others through inspiration, influence and impact.

What's one thing you'd really like to accomplish? Has that goal changed over the years?

One of my goals is to serve as chief operating officer of a hospital. I have been in pursuit of this goal for the last five years and have the same passion to achieve this goal as I did five years ago. Another major goal is to give back to my community through service on a nonprofit board.
