"I kept a dream journal for a longtime, which is just kind of an endless pit of source imagery that I can pull from," says artist Victoria Sauer. "Dreams are an interpretation of what you see and do and experience and feel in your waking life."

This image, says the recent University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduate, was inspired by the conscious and the subconscious. The couple is technically kissing, she explains, but because of the plastic wrap separating the two, their lips never really touch.
