Sawyer Missionary Baptist Church is calling all artists, vendors and crafters to participate in its first Famboree event, a fundraiser for the church youth group's mission trip to Canada this summer. The event is being held at the church Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"It's going to be good family fun," said church youth leader Laura Knox. "It's a beautiful old church in a white country chapel with beautiful yards, and it's an inexpensive opportunity to look around at the crafts or do fun things with the kids."

The church has space for up to 30 vendors, including jewelry and makeup consultants, artists, crafters, yard sale tents and food, she said.

The cost for vendors to rent a space for the day with electricity is $30, or $25 for a space without electricity. The deadline for vendors to sign up is April 22.

The event will also feature live bluegrass and a chili cook-off, said Knox, and the church will set up its own huge yard sale tent, as well as booths with fun activities for children, such as face painting. Food including hot dogs and hamburgers will also be for sale.

The funds raised will go toward van rental and gas to get the group of about 20 youth and adults to Camp of the Woods, a Christian summer camp in Canada where the youth group volunteered for the first time last year. To get the group there, $3,000 needs to be raised, Knox said.

"It gives them a chance to reach out to kids they wouldn't normally reach out to," she said as to why she thinks it is important for the youth group to have this experience. "It's a good place to come for a week and build friendships and build your relationship with God."

Sawyer Missionary Baptist Church is at 7428 Sawyer Pike. For more information or to rent a vendor space, call Knox at 304-2733.
