Signal Mountain now has a new spot to grab a bite and a beer - and soon, to get a glass of wine as well.

The business isn't new; Mayfly Coffee first opened its doors as a cafe in 2015, and has been selling its locally roasted coffee at area farmers markets for about five years.

In fact, Mayfly is planning a five-year anniversary celebration at its recently renovated cafe to be held near the end of this month, though the exact date has not yet been set.

The cafe's exterior is the only thing older customers will recognize since Mayfly reopened in June. With the addition of a kitchen, Mayfly now offers a simple menu of pastries baked in-house along with made-to-order paninis. Owner Atley Davidson said he plans to expand the menu soon to include small plates and shareables in the evenings, eventually adding soups and salads as well.

Along with food, Mayfly began offering beer from local breweries such as Hutton & Smith, Heaven & Ale and OddStory with the opening of its renovated space. The business has also started the permitting process to serve wine, said Davidson.

Other changes include the addition of an outdoor patio, a reconfigured bar area, and more and different types of seating inside, where the cafe can now accommodate around 45 people, up from about a dozen previously.

All that seating will come in handy as Mayfly kicks off its new calendar of social events, which include quiz night on Thursdays and live music on a rotating basis, with the possible addition of a game night on Wednesdays. Due to customers' requests, Davidson has extended the hours until 8 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and until 5 p.m. Sunday.

"We wanted to make it not just a morning community gathering space, but a place in the evening where people could socialize and hang out," he said.

General Manager Brianna Garriss said that since the renovations, she's noticed more people stopping by in the evenings to have a beer. Mayfly now hosts a happy hour Tuesday-Friday from 4-6 p.m., when the cafe takes $1 off the price of all beers. She said more different types of groups, such as study groups and book clubs, seem to be using the cafe as a gathering spot as well.

"It really is a versatile space," said Garriss. "I've seen it used in so many ways. There's really something for everybody."
