A new school year is here again, and several Signal Mountain businesses are coming together to bid summer one last farewell with an event focused solely on fun before studying reigns supreme.

Mountain Top Toys: A Learning Express Store and Drs. Daniel and Lucy Sawrie of Sawrie Orthodontics and Sawrie Family Dentistry are hosting their sixth annual back-to-school block party Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking area in front of their businesses at 1229-1231 Taft Highway in Signal Mountain.

"It's the first time after school starts that friends can get together and have fun outside of school and parents can catch up," said Mountain Top Toys owner Patrick Holland. "It's also a great time for families new to the mountain, who may not have any social connections yet, to meet other parents and for their kids to meet some of their classmates in a fun atmosphere."

The free event features inflatables, putt-putt golf, crafts, snow cones and giveaways. Peppa Pig, the character from the popular animated British TV series by the same name, will also be making her debut on Signal Mountain - an exciting new addition to this year's block party, said Holland.

Parents of children with birthdays coming up can also use the occasion to make sure they receive the gifts they want while supporting their child's school. For every child who creates a "birthday box," where toys purchased from their wishlist are stored until their big day, the store donates $5 to the school of their choice. Since starting the birthday box donations this summer, Holland said he's donated more than $200 to local schools.
