After four years of work by LaFayette High School art students, a large mosaic tree now welcomes guests to the Children's Department at the LaFayette-Walker County Library.
"It's exactly the entrance I hoped for," said Library Director Lecia Eubanks. "We really wanted a special entrance for this age group. If we can create reading excitement at this age, then it sticks with them. We want the Children's Department to draw participation in it."
LaFayette High School art teacher Heather Hawkins-Parker said creating the mosaic tree was a learning experience for her students and they were all pushed out of their comfort zone to complete it. The original design was changed by the fire marshal who asked them not to suspend clouds from the ceiling, she added.
"We had to believe in the project," said Hawkins-Parker. "There was funding and budget cuts. About 50 students worked hard on this for four years."
