The Joe Stock Memorial Swimming Pool of LaFayette is opening for business this season on Memorial Day, May 30.

"Despite any obstacles we face, workers have gone above and beyond what they needed to do to get the pool open for the public," said interim LaFayette Parks and Recreation Director Scott Underwood. "We had a company out of East Ridge do several thousand dollars' worth of work to the pool. The company workers repaired cracks in the plaster."

About six weeks ago, it was unsure whether the repairs would get done in time, he said, but everything worked out and "the pool looks great."

The LaFayette Pool has been around for 28 years.

"We always have three lifeguards on deck," said Underwood. "We have a slide, but no diving board. The pool ranges from three and a half feet down to 12 feet in the deep end. We have a kiddie pool that is only 18 inches deep in a separate fenced-in area."

Eight weeks of swimming lessons will be offered this season through the North Georgia YMCA. Children ages 6 months to 17 years can enroll. All registration for lessons will be done through the YMCA, which can be reached at 706-935-2226.

"We are really excited to be able to offer good, quality swimming lessons through the Y," said Underwood. "I grew up in LaFayette. I know when I started out learning to swim that Sue Harrington carried me out to the deep end at age 5 and taught me how to swim and tread water."

The pool is located at 638 S. Main St. General daily admission is $4 per person with ages 3 and under admitted for free, and pool passes are available for $40 for an individual and $100 for a family.

Pool hours are Monday-Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. The pool is open for night dips Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m.

Parties are offered Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and Saturday mornings.

The pool will close for the season Aug. 2.
