In need of bedding, clothing, a bicycle or rollerblades? You can get it all for free at Central Church of Christ's 13th annual Community Giveaway Saturday, Oct. 1 starting at 9 a.m.
Donations for the giveaway will be accepted through the early morning of Oct. 1 at the church, 400 Vine St.
"People have useful things to get rid of, but they don't want to throw it away," said Central COC Deacon Chris Willis. "Now they know it will go to someone that could use it."
The most-needed item is bedding, he said, adding that a lot of people in need don't have bedding and thus have to sleep on floors and in chairs. No matter what is donated, it must be in good condition, he added.
"We drive around and look for people in need," said Willis. "We drive around and say, 'Hey, we are giving away shoes and bedding.' And we take them around and let them shop for what they need."
The event has grown since its inception, both in the number of those who give and those who receive.
"The first year we had 100 people come through," Willis said. "And this year it will be 250 come through or more. If they feel like they need it, they can have it. We ask no questions to participants. It's honestly just to share something we have. So, we don't worry about someone taking something if they don't need it."
