Area residents who regularly use Ashland Terrace may be inconvenienced in the coming weeks as the city of Red Bank replaces a culvert at the road's intersection with Dayton Boulevard.

City Manager Randall Smith said the city's engineers reviewed the infrastructure at the intersection and determined the culvert, through which Stringer's Branch flows under Ashland Terrace, needed to be replaced with a new concrete box culvert in order to prevent further deterioration and a potential structural failure in the future.

"There's an indention there [above the culvert] now, and there's a lot of traffic volume that makes that turn," he said. "There's no imminent danger of collapse, but it's a situation that needs replacing."

The city is currently waiting on plans from its engineering firm, Smith said. A deadline has not been set, but they should be completed soon. Once plans are received, the project will go out for bid for the following 15 days. The city is working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation for the required environmental permits, and the project is expected to go before the city commission for approval sometime in August, Smith said.

Once work begins, Ashland Terrace will be closed from its intersection with Dayton Boulevard - which will remain open - up to Bank Street 24/7 for two to three weeks until the project is complete. Smith said they hope to finish this construction season, or before winter.

Updates on the project and the detour for rerouting traffic, which has not yet been determined, will be posted at ashlandterraceproject.com.

He said he does not yet have an estimate for the project's cost, which will be entirely funded by the city. The city's recently passed 2018 budget will need to be amended to factor in the cost when it is determined, Smith said.
