This Friday and Saturday, East Brainerd-area residents can enjoy a home-cooked barbecue meal while helping children across the city - and to prepare, the East Brainerd Kiwanis Club has purchased more than 5,500 pounds of food.

The club, formerly known as the Brainerd Kiwanis Club, is hosting its 71st annual Kiwanis BBQ at Tennessee Baptist Children's Home July 28-29, offering a traditional meal of pork, chicken, slaw and beans.

With a fundraising goal of $35,000, the group will use the money raised for projects requested by Chambliss Center for Children, Bethel Bible Village and many other organizations, said Bill Pinson, chair of the club's Membership, Growth and Education Committee.

In particular, he said, the organization's sponsored school, Woodmore Elementary, is in need of a playground remodel. Club members visit the school to read weekly to the children, he added.

"Not only will you have a great meal, but that money is all going to help children," Pinson said of the barbecue.

Anyone interested can stop by the Baptist Children's Home at 6623 Lee Highway Friday, July 28 or Saturday, July 29 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and pick up meals. Cost per meal is $10. Larger orders to prepare at home at another time will also be available.

The club meets each Friday at noon at the Holiday Inn off Shallowford Road.
