A week before its annual Spring Plant Sale, Crabtree Farms is hosting its first Pollinator Palooza to teach local gardeners about the importance of using native plants in gardens to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

The free event will focus on how the decline of pollinators threatens food production, and how to create environments to attract them, said Ann Brown, co-chair of public information for the Tennessee Valley Chapter of Wild Ones.

The Wild Ones organization, which partnered with Crabtree Farms for the event, will also showcase a monarch waystation, a type of garden that attracts both caterpillars and butterflies.

The Pollinator Palooza will also focus on types of pesticides found in gardening materials that can be harmful to the necessary creatures, said Crabtree Community Partnerships Manager Avery Patten.

"We want to show people how to help the pollinators, not kill them," Patten said.

"Our goal is to educate vegetable gardeners about how to improve their yields by incorporating native plants into their gardens," Brown added. "We advocate for pesticide-free environments to help support our pollinators."

The Pollinator Palooza is Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is free, but attendees need to register by visiting crabtreefarms.org/gather-and-celebrate or by emailing Melissa Eaton at meaton@crabtreefarms.org.
