As part of the effort to highlight the outdoor opportunities in Walker County, the local government and chamber of commerce are launching a series of related events this year, beginning May 25 at Mountain Cove Farms.

As part of the Walker Rocks Outdoor Series, the county will host a family campout near the antebellum mansion in McLemore Cove. Campers can relax by the campfire while making s'mores, participate in activities such as three-legged races, sack races and kickball, and catch a special showing of the '80s adventure movie "The Goonies."

Food, drinks and popcorn will be available on-site to purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Family Crisis Center of Walker, Dade, Catoosa and Chattooga counties.

Families can set up tents beginning at 2 p.m. on May 25 and stay through the night. Attendees will need to pack up their tents by 9 a.m. on May 26.

Tickets are $10 (cash) at the gate, but families can buy them online in advance for $5. Purchase at WalkerRocks.com or through the Walker County Chamber of Commerce website.

"This is a family friendly event that offers a unique opportunity for parents with young children to try out camping and see what it's like to sleep outdoors," Chamber of Commerce President Lacey Wilson said in a statement. "We also see this as a staycation of sorts for folks looking for something unique to do with their family over the holiday weekend."

McLemore Cove is a 283-acre property where Lookout and Pigeon mountains meet. Walker County bought the land in 2008 for $2 million from Rome, Georgia, insurance executive Delos Yancey III, a frequent Republican donor and member of the Georgia Board of Natural Resources and North Georgia Mountains Authority.

The county moved the property to the Walker County Development Authority in 2015 as potential collateral in a $15 million bond deal.
