Locals can purchase an empty bowl to help fill the bowls of community members in need during Scenic City Clay Arts' Empty Bowls Sale Friday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The nonprofit community pottery studio is hosting the fundraiser for another nonprofit, Family Promise of Greater Chattanooga, which helps low-income families and veterans achieve independence using an integrated approach that includes meeting immediate needs as well as addressing the root causes of poverty.

Scenic City Clay Arts is at 301 E. 11th St.

Scenic City Clay Arts previously hosted a similar fundraiser for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, and the studio's board wanted to host another sale benefiting a different organization serving the homeless, said Scenic City Clay Arts Executive Director Joy Key.

"At the studio, a lot of what I do is making partnerships with other organizations," she said.

One example is the pottery program Scenic City does with the YMCA Community Action Program, an intervention and prevention program for at-risk students.

Bowls available at the upcoming sale were created through the Empty Bowls initiative by people in the community at different places around town, such as Chattanooga Cares, Boynton Terrace and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, said Lolly Durant, who facilitates the Empty Bowls workshops. The bowls are then fired in the Scenic City Clay Arts studio, and most are priced at around $10.

"It's such a unique project to get the community involved in creating something that can then be used in order to financially support both organizations," said Key, who hopes to sell a couple of hundred bowls during the fundraiser.

Shoppers will also have the opportunity to see Scenic City Clay Arts members at work when they come by for the sale, Key added.
