Cheese: The Grate Debate

Cheese gets a bad rap, yet our love for the fatty dairy product prevails. I say it’s time to make over cheese’s image and openly declare “Je aime le fromage!”

The French do. In fact, France is the world’s top cheese consumer, yet studies consistently show they are healthier than Americans. I’m not necessarily trying to link a cheesier diet to better health … or maybe I am. The heart wants what it wants. And according to a 2017 Time magazine article, recent studies have shown that people who eat small amounts of cheese every day have healthier hearts.

Of course, the article continues, this does not mean eating a cheese pizza every day. The study showed that those with the lowest risk for heart disease ate about 40 grams of cheese a day — the size of a matchbook.

Still, a couple of cubes of good cheese paired with fresh fruit? That’s a next-level lunch — and my new favorite meal. And if you still need convincing? Check out Chattanooga’s new cheese shop, Bleu Fox, boasting dozens of different cheeses from around the world.

Indeed, vive le fromage.
