Behind the Chattanooga area's vast medical infrastructure are the people who put the "care" in health care. The Champions of Health Care awards were created to tell the stories of selflessness and dedication that often go hand in hand with healing.

Edge magazine, in partnership with Chattanooga Hamilton County Medical Society and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, are pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Champions of Health Care Awards. In the following pages, you will read the stories of a doctor who does gall bladder surgeries in Africa, the physician/administrator who started Erlanger's family medicine residency from a closet office, the originators of a program that provides $1 million a month in free specialty care to the needy, a courageous nurse practitioner and the doctors who would not give up on a pioneering approach to stroke care. Others have been singled out for a lifetime of achievements.

Together, they are among the best and the brightest, the heart-beat of health care in the Tennessee Valley.
