* Year established: 2012
* Employees: almost 600
* Milestones: Steam Logistics has grown over 1,000% since 2019 but the company boasts that it "has remained a people-focused company that remains passionate about our team." The Chattanooga-based freight logistics firm, which has twice before been recognized as one of Chattanooga's best employers, is preparing to add 400 employees over the next five years in conjunction with a nearly $7 million expansion and renovation of the historic John Ross Building downtown. The new facility is dubbed "the Steam Center" and is where the company will shift its headquarters. Steam Logistics began as an overseas logistics company and later expanded into the domestic U.S. market and now has five offices across the country. Steam provides integrated logistics solutions across international, drayage and domestic transportation modes to more than 2,000 customers globally.
* Why this is a Best Place to Work: "We are a diverse group of high-minded individuals, dedicated to continuing to drive our company's explosive growth and investing in our company's unique culture," Steam Logistics said in a report on its employment practices. "We are fun, but serious about outcomes. We are quirky, but we get things done. Above all, we are committed to living out our company's mission and maxims and we want exceptional people to join us on this journey."
* Quotable: "We're growing at a fast clip," says Steam Chief Executive Jason Provonsha, who expects Steam Logistics to again this year be on Inc. magazine's list of America's fastest-growing businesses. "We solve complex supply chain issues. There's no shortage of those.Culture exists by default or by design. We all spent time talking about this. How do we build this for scale?"
